- Robert Mahoney remembers his father:
This is a sad day andyet a very happy day for Mahoney Family. It is a happy day because our father Tom is at long last reunited with his beloved Freda, his oldest son Thomas Jr., his youngest son XIE, his grandson Jackie Cohen and his son in law Paul Cusick.
Tom Mahoney was in his 99th year-can you imagine what he had experienced over the years since 1893. When he was born the population in the United States was about 65 million. Today the population is about 250 million. He and his beloved Freda helped that expansion. They had seven children, 19 grandchildren, 33 great greatchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
He met our mother not far from this church in 1910. My father told me he immediately fell in love with the most beautiful girl in Brokline and he knew at that time that this Swedish beauty was going to be his wife. From that time on not a day passed that he did not see Freda and this covered a span of about 64 years until her death in 1974. A true love story.
During his lifetime he witnessed the transformation of this country from a farming society to the greatest industrial country in the world.
From horse & buggy to automobiles, the expansion of railroads, the airplane, space ships. Telegraph to telephone, radio, moving pictures and television, video cameras and computers. He even saw the Red Sox win the World Series. He witnessed great advances in science and medicine-like the elimination of the polio virus- a dreaded virus that afflicted millions including my brother Carlton.
When he was born in 1893, Leo XIII was pope and there were 10 Popes during his lifetime. Grover Cleveland was President of the United States and my father lived under 18 Presidents. He lived during 6 wars that the U.S was involved in.
He was a great believer in education even though he stopped his formal education after he graduated from grammar school. He urged his children and grandchildren to get as much formal education as possible because as he stated- ''one thing that never can be taken away from you is your edcation''.
He believed in the ''Ecumential'' spirit long before it became fashionable. He always taught us that you never judge a person by race, religion, nationality or gender-that each person is an individual and in life you will find good, bad and indifferent individuals.
People have asked me how I would describe my father. I remember back in 1936 during the great depression, when many families were on welfare, I overheard a neighbor say ''that Tom Mahoney is a good provider''. I was only 10 at the time but I remeber that statement as if it was made yesterday. My father was a gentle person, a person who always provided for the spiritual needs as well as the material needs of life for his family.
He was a good provider and that is the best way to describe him.
We pray that his soul rests in peace.
